NTSA directives on matatu stickers and graffiti
Meanwhile, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) issued directives for strict adherence to guidelines for all PSVs.
NTSA cited cases of violation by different matatu operators and shared directives for corrective measures.
The regulator said all matatus operators should ensure:
- The name of the Sacco or Company under which each vehicle is licensed and displayed on the front, rear, and both sides of the vehicle by Regulation 7(j)
- The branding must be uniform and consistent across all vehicles operating under a single operator to ensure cohesion and easy identification.
- Any franchise or partner branding is presented in a manner that does not overshadow, conflict with, or dilute the branding of the licensed operator;
- All innovative decorations that are not part of the operator’s approved brand design are strictly prohibited and must be removed with immediate effect.
- Drivers and conductors assigned to the vehicles must don the prescribed uniforms and must always have a valid driving licence vehicle class category(s) and valid public service badges while on duty; and
- Any music played in the vehicles during the passenger journey must comply with the prescribed volume limits set out in the relevant guidelines

Matatu licence suspension
NTSA warned that matatus that will fail to comply risk suspension of operations or revocation of the licence.
In March 2025, the regulator revoked the operation licence of Super Metro matatu.
The authority issued the directives for the matatu operator to follow before their licence was restored.
