Attended by the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr Workneh Gebeyehu, the event will take place from Thursday, July 10 to Sunday, July 13, 2025.
What's executive leaders agenda at AU meeting?
Gebeyehu, who leads the IGAD delegation, aims to advance the region’s strategic priorities on multilateralism, peace, and securitymultilateralism, peace, and security, trade, gender equality, youth empowerment, and sustainable development.
As the chair of the Inter-REC Coordination Platform, he will also host a dedicated meeting of the RECs to discuss shared challenges and opportunities for collaboration.
The session will include an update on progress made during IGAD’s chairmanship of the Platform, with a focus on strengthening inter-REC cooperation, streamlining institutional coordination, and amplifying Africa’s collective voice in global governance.
The Mid-Year Coordination Meeting is expected to align efforts of the African Union, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and Member States under the AU’s institutional reform agenda and Agenda 2063.
“This gathering represents Africa’s united effort to shape its future through coordinated action, regional solidarity, and inclusive development. IGAD remains fully committed to fostering collaboration across RECs and aligning with the AU’s vision for a prosperous, integrated, and peaceful Africa,” said Gebeyehu.
Gebeyehu added that the continent's history, resilience, and future remain rooted in unity and collective action.
While holding the meetings with top executives and leaders, he promised to share the progress made — as Chair of the Inter-REC Coordination Platform — in advancing regional integration and deepening collaboration between RECs and the African Union.
The executive chair noted that IGAD remains steadfast in its partnership with the African Union and sister RECs in building a peaceful, integrated, and prosperous continent.
