Who is David Maraga?

Maraga's tenure as chief justice (CJ) ended in January 2021, after attaining 70 years of age.

He served in Kenya's Judiciary for 18 years. Before being appointed CJ, he worked as a High Court Judge from 2003.

In 2016, he was appointed president of the Supreme Court and later nullified the 2017 presidential elections.

How much was Maraga paid in retirement?

According to the Retirement Benefits (Deputy President and Designated State Officers) Act 2015, a retired chief justice is entitled to a lump sum payment upon retirement.

The retirement benefit is calculated as a sum equal to one year's salary paid for each term served in office.

Based on his salary per month during his tenure as the CJ, Maraga pocketed a lump sum payment of KSh 15,934,656.

How much does Maraga earn in pension?

His monthly pension is equivalent to 80% of his last monthly salary, which was KSh 1,327,888 as per the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) 2017 circular on benefits to state officers in the Judiciary.

Therefore, 80% of KSh 1,327,888 means that the former CJ earns KSh 1,062,310.4 in pension per month.

Other benefits the former CJ enjoys in retirement are:

- Medical allowances - These include KSh 10 million for overseas treatment, KSh 300,000 annually for inpatient and outpatient care, and KSh 75,000 each for dental and optical services.

- Transport allowance, including two saloon cars with a capacity of 2,000 cc and a four-wheel-drive vehicle with a capacity of 3,000 cc -all replaced once every four years

- Fuel allowance equal to 15% of the current monthly salary of the office holder

- Staff, Security and Diplomatic Privileges.

Was David Maraga's security withdrawn?

Meanwhile, the former CJ accused the government of withdrawing his security in June 2025.

Maraga, who is entitled to two guards, demanded that the security withdrawn on June 26, 2025, be reinstated, saying it is his retirement right.
