Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano said the ground-breaking initiative is aimed at making the district a vibrant centre for tourism and wildlife conservation.
Speaking at the signing of the agreement on Monday, July 21, Miano lauded the collaboration as an important step towards unlocking Murang’a’s untapped tourism potential in line with the national Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
“Murang’a has great potential, a rich heritage, beautiful landscapes and a vibrant culture. Through this partnership, we will bring these strengths to the fore and ensure that tourism works for the people,” said Miano.
What’s contained in the initiative
The partnership will ensure the following steps are followed to revive tourism in the county:
Branding and Mapping Tourism Assets: From adventure and eco-tourism to cultural and sports tourism, the county's unique offerings will be jointly catalogued and promoted.
Reviving Cultural Landmarks: A major highlight will be the rehabilitation of Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga, a sacred cultural heritage site set to become a flagship attraction.
Tourism Investment Profile: A strategic profile will be developed to attract local and international investors into Murang’a’s tourism sector.
Marketing Integration: Murang’a will be positioned within broader tourism circuits across Kenya to enhance visibility and draw a diverse tourist base.
Eco-Tourism Access: The gazettement of Aberdare Forest gates (Gatare, Mioro, Wanjerere, Kangari) will be fast-tracked to expand eco-tourism access.
Youth Empowerment & MICE Tourism: The initiative will support youth employment through tourism-based programs and elevate the county's profile in Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE).
Wildlife Conflict Solutions: A plan to reduce human-wildlife conflict—especially involving monkeys and hippos—will be rolled out with the Kenya Wildlife Service and local communities.
Creating jobs for Kenyans
Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata expressed confidence in the new initiative, saying it will support the county’s commitment to creating jobs for young people.
“This partnership marks a turning point for Murang’a. We’re ready to harness our cultural and natural assets to create jobs, attract investment, and build a strong tourism brand for our county,” said Kang'ata.
Kang’ata added that a joint coordination framework will be established to ensure seamless implementation and monitoring of all action points.
