Why is there traffic disruption in Nairobi?

Nairobi is hosting a high-profile match of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), a key fixture in Africa’s premier football tournament.

In anticipation of the large crowds and heightened security measures around the match venue, several major roads will be either fully or partially closed.

Which Nairobi roads will be closed off during CHAN?

According to KAA, the Aerodrome Road will be fully closed from Madaraka roundabout to Bunyala roundabout.

"Use Likoni-Enterprise Road or the Southern Bypass to access the CBD from Mombasa Road," KAA recommended.

One side of Lang’ata Road will be closed from Madaraka roundabout to Lusaka roundabout.

The KAA advised travellers to use Raila Odinga Road (formerly Mbagathi Way) or Muhoho Road to reach the CBD from Lang’ata Road.

One side of Mombasa Road will also be closed from Lusaka roundabout to Bunyala roundabout.

"From the CBD to Thika Road / Ruiru / Juja / Thika: Use Limuru Road or Kiambu Road. From Thika Road to the CBD: Use Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road," KAA said.

The authority is urging passengers to check their flight schedules and plan for longer travel times to avoid missing flights at both airports.

“Passengers are strongly urged to allow for prolonged travel times to ensure timely arrival at JKIA or Wilson Airport,” KAA said in its notice.

This advisory comes as Nairobi plays host to thousands of fans, players, and officials for the highly anticipated CHAN tournament.
