Airtel Completes Mobile Money Service Revamp After May 4 Deadline

Airtel Kenya has completed its mobile money service revamp a few hours past the initial deadline it had set.

The system upgrade by the telco started on Saturday, May 3, at 11pm and was expected to end on Sunday, May 4, at 11am.

However, a statement posted by the telco on its X account indicated that the system of upgrade ended on Sunday, May 4, at 9pm.

"We are pleased to announce that the Airtel Money system upgrade has been successfully completed and all services are now fully operational. We apologize for the lengthy intermittence," said Airtel Kenya in the notice which was seen by TUKO.co.ke.

Airtel said the enhancement of its mobile money services will allow it to serve customers better.

Airtel customers to get better services

The firm said that after the revamp of its Airtel Money services that is now complete, customers will now be able to get Airtel Money statements as soon as they need them.

This will be easily accessible through the My Airtel App and USSD for both customers and agents.

Airtel further said that with the upgrade of its system, customers should expect simplified money transfers.

"Transfers to other networks will only require the customer to enter the recipients number once, faster service experience when using My Airtel App, USSD and our recently enhanced Sim Menu," said the telco in the statement.

To reward customers who were impacted by the Airtel Money switch-off during the period of upgrade, all bank-to-Airtel Money transactions, paybill payments and agent withdrawals will get a 100% cashback of the transaction fee as airtime until Monday, May 5 at 11:59pm.

Airtel was carrying out the last phase of its mobile money system upgrade to enhance customer experience and improve its capabilities to deliver more innovative products to its customers.

Airtel Money customers hit 3 million

In other news, data from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) shows that the telco has a significant number of subscribers.

The report shows that in the quarter between October and December 2024, Airtel Kenya mobile money services, Airtel Money, had gained ground against Safaricom's M-Pesa, to hit 3 million customers.

The report further said that mobile money subscription in the country hit a base of 42,302,833 during the same period under review.

On this number, Airtel Money commanded a market share gain of 8.9%, translating to 3,764,952 customers.
