Why EPRA raised pump prices

The regulator cited an increase in the landed cost of imported petroleum products to the country.

Super petrol landed cost increased by 6.45%, diesel by 6.27% and kerosene by 6.95%, between May and June 2025.

"The average landed cost of imported Super Petrol increased by 6.45% from $590.24 per cubic metre in May 2025 to $628.30 per cubic metre in June 2025; Diesel increased by 6.27% from $580.23 per cubic metre to $616.59 per cubic metre while Kerosene increased by 6.95% from $569.00 per cubic metre to $608.34 per cubic metre over the same period," the EPRA report continued in part.

The regulator also cited high international prices of Murban Crude Oil in May, compared to June 2025 at $72.63 (KSh 9,384) and $67.73 (KSh 8,751) per barrel, respectively.

What are the international oil prices?

In June 2025, global oil prices increased following escalating tensions in the Middle East.

This raised concerns over the potential supply disruptions in the market.

Brent crude rose to $74.87 (KSh 9,600) per barrel, US West Texas Intermediate hit $73.74 (KSh 9,700), and Murban Crude, which Kenya benchmarks, climbed above $70 (KSh 9,000).

Economist Daniel Kathali explained that the rise in global oil prices will lead to increased pump prices, as Kenya imports its petroleum products based on Murban Crude Oil prices.
