At TUKO.co.ke, we believe in leading from the front, not just in digital storytelling, but also in shaping the future of media in Kenya. This belief was demonstrated by our Managing Director, Julia Majale, who participated in the Media Sustainability Dialogue held in Nairobi on 7th July 2025. The event was hosted by the Media Council of Kenya, in partnership with WAN-IFRA (World Association of News Publishers).
The forum, which focused on digital transformation, revenue diversification and media business innovation, brought together top executives and media leaders to explore strategies for building sustainable, future-ready media houses. Julia joined the panel to share insights drawn from TUKO’s unique position as one of Kenya’s largest digital news platforms
For TUKO, digital transformation wasn’t something to adapt to; it was the very foundation of the brand. But Julia was quick to note that even digital-native media houses aren’t immune to disruption. “We were built for the digital-first Kenyan,” she said, “but platforms, algorithms, and audience habits keep changing. What worked yesterday could be irrelevant today, requiring media houses not just to adapt, but to evolve constantly.
In that same breath, she shared what has remained constant: trust. “Trust travels faster than technology,” she explained, pointing to TUKO.co.ke’s milestone of 30 million monthly page views and its recognition as Kenya’s most visited digital platform by MCK and Reuters. “Our greatest achievement hasn’t been just growth, it’s building a loyal audience that engages and shares our content, especially in an era where information is abundant but credibility is scarce.
Another point of reflection during the dialogue was the role of emerging technologies, particularly generative AI, in shaping the future of journalism. While AI tools are often viewed with caution, Julia brought a more nuanced perspective, one that sees AI not as a threat but as an opportunity to deepen editorial impact.
At TUKO, AI is already part of the workflow, used responsibly to enhance efficiency, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), audience targeting and production quality. The emphasis, she noted, should remain on ensuring AI supports, rather than replacing editorial judgement.
Away from the panel, Julia was also invited to speak at the Media Lounge during the WAN-IFRA WIN Kenya Skills Building & Networking Conference, this time not as an executive, but as a mentor. She shared her journey: from being a naturally curious girl who asked a few too many questions at home, to leading one of Kenya’s leading digital news platforms.
She spoke about whole-hearted effort, a value she picked up as a student at Daystar University and carried into every stage of her career. “Whatever you do, do it well,” she told the young journalists in the room. “That’s how people start noticing you and that’s how you rise.”
Julia also took on the role of moderator in a best practice session on Mobile-First Journalism: Adapting News for the Digital Age. In guiding that conversation, she reflected on the rapid shift in how people consume news, especially via mobile and how newsrooms must keep evolving to meet audiences where they are, mostly on mobile.
Julia’s participation at WAN-IFRA’s engagements reflected more than just individual insight; it highlighted TUKO.co.ke’s ongoing commitment to actively contributing to the future of media in Kenya.
