X platform, formerly Twitter, announced changes to its terms to improve transparency for Parody, Commentary, and Fan (PCF) accounts.
Which X accounts will be affected?
The company, owned by American billionaire Elon Musk, said the updated terms will take effect from Thursday, April 10, 2025.
"We are rolling out updates to improve transparency for Parody, Commentary, and Fan (PCF) accounts on our platform. Starting April 10, all PCF accounts will be required to include PCF-compliant keywords at the beginning of their account names and avoid using identical avatars to the entities they depict," said X.
The requirements also apply to accounts that have the Parody label. For instance, a fan account name will need to begin with either 'fake or parody', then followed by the name of the individual or company it is imitating.
Why X introduces the changes to parody accounts
The platform said it will continue to refine the parody label and soon have more details on how it will replace the requirements.
"These changes are designed to help users better understand the unaffiliated nature of PCF accounts and reduce the risk of confusion or impersonation. We encourage all affected accounts to update their profiles before the enforcement date," the platform added.
According to the X Authenticity policy, all accounts on the platform should be authentic.
No user, including parody, fan and commentary account holders, is allowed to create, operate, or mass-register accounts that are not legitimate, genuine and transparent as to their source, identity, and popularity.
Reducing negative content on X
This came after Musk advocated for positive content on the social media platform.
In January 2025, the world's richest man urged users of the X platform to post more positive, beautiful, or informative content on their accounts and reduce negativity.
He said X platform engineers are developing a significant algorithm update aimed at promoting engaging and informational content while minimizing regrettable user time.
Musk, who also owns SpaceX and Tesla, noted that the company is working on tools to give users more control over their content feeds, allowing them to adjust dynamically.
The tech mogul said a lot of negative information is being pushed on the platform, and although this has grown the time users spend on the platform, it has increased regretted user time on X.
