Who is super M-Pesa agent?
In an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke, Safaricom explained the difference between an M-Pesa agent and a super M-Pesa business.
The telco said M-Pesa agents are contracted by super agents, who get their contracts from the company.
"To get an M-Pesa agent till, you should apply for a contract from a super agent. The company contracts the super agent who meets the set requirements," said Safaricom.

How to become M-Pesa agent and super agent
Safaricom shared the requirements to start the M-Pesa agent and super agent business.
Standard requirements for super agents
Minimum number of agent outlets:
- A prospective agent must be registered as a company or equivalent with at least three outlets ready to offer M‐Pesa under the company names. The company must have traded for a minimum period of six months.
- Proposed outlets shall be audited before the commencement of business.
Minimum M‐PESA cash investment:
- An agent will be expected to avail a minimum of KSh 100,000 per outlet once the application is approved.
- Successful agents will be required to deposit the money within one month of signing the contract, failure to which the contract shall be revoked.
Staff:
The agent should preferably employ competent staff with a minimum of KCSE to handle the service.
Technical requirements:
- The agent's head office must have the following equipment to ensure that operations are conducted professionally:
- 1 Computer and ancillary equipment with memory of at least 512.
- At least 2 people to handle head office operations on a day-to-day basis (may not be on a full-time basis).
- Internet connectivity with connection speeds acceptable to Safaricom.
- 1 printer for printing downloaded reports.
- Any other items/equipment necessary to conduct the business, like desks, chairs, stationery, pens and a pay point.
- A dedicated Head office mobile phone number
- An official e‐mail contact.
- An ETR Machine.

Premises and their maintenance:
An M‐PESA agent must conform to Safaricom branding and merchandising standards.
The minimum branding requirements will be supplied to you on commencement of business.
Exceptional Requirements
Stand alone agents
Stand alone agents are special categories of agents who have no miminmu requirements but would be beneficial to M‐Pesa as Agents.
They include Banks, Forex Bureaus, Hotels, Major Supermarkets, Petrol Stations, Hospitals, Clinics, Convenience store.
The requirements are:
- A minimum of one outlet.
- Minimum Float balance of KSh 200,000 in the head office. Organisation ready to avail a minimum of KSh 200,000 as capital to run M-Pesa Agency business.
Special category
The special agents are considered based on:
- Remote locations.
- Unique operations (Hospitals, petrol stations, hotels)
- A minimum of one outlet.
What are trends in M-Pesa agent business
According to data from Safaricom, M-Pesa agents grew slightly by 0.1% to 262,304, against a customer growth of 5.2% to 32.11 million.
M-Pesa payment transaction value and M-Pesa to bank transaction value also grew, with the number of businesses accepting M-Pesa payments growing to 1 million.
This, according to technology expert Moses Kemibaro, could affect M-Pesa agents, as most customers shift to cashless transactions
