Next comes the choice of university where to undertake their studies – a university that suits them. Choosing a university is one of the most consequential decisions.

Aware of this, Mount Kenya University (MKU) is giving prospective students many more reasons to choose it as their preferred academic destination. Recent developments at the university have not just raised its profile, but also made it an even more attractive choice for learners.

“On top of the reasons that have traditionally made MKU popular over the years, we are adding new programmes, forging more partnerships that enrich teaching and learning, and investing in new facilities,” says the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Deogratius JAGANYI.

The university offers programmes to both self-sponsored and KUCCPS-placed students

MKU is known for its diverse, quality programmes offered through flexible learning modes powered by technology, and affordable fees paid in an easy instalment plan. This is in addition to several other reasons that set the institution apart in Kenya’s higher education landscape.

High ranking

In June 2025, MKU was ranked among top 5 Kenyan universities in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2025. This latest favourable ranking further confirms that MKU’s continuous improvement effort is paying off, and highlights the institution’s focus on excellence.

The Impact Rankings recognise institutions making meaningful contributions to sustainable development, environmental responsibility, and social impact on a global scale.

Recognition by the US’s Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) allows MKU medical graduates to pursue professional advancement in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand – and to work in those countries without having graduated from there.

In 2024, the United Kingdom’s (UK’s) General Medical Council (GMC) granted recognition to MKU’s Medical School. The GMC sets standards that medical doctors and their trainers must meet.

In June 2025, MKU’s Medical School became a full member of the Consortium of Medical Schools- Africa (COMS-A). The institution’s inclusion in this growing network dedicated to advancing medical education, research, and healthcare across Africa.
