Fridah Mwaka Panics as Car Is Hit By Teargas Canister During Albert Ojwang Protests

Nation Media journalist Fridah Mwaka found herself in the middle of demos between protesters and police in Nairobi CBD.

On Thursday, June 12, Kenyans took to the streets to demand justice after the murder of Albert Ojwang for an alleged tweet online.
The youth also called for the resignation or firing of Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat, for being linked to the case.
What happened to Fridah Mwaka?
Fridah was one of the journalists on the scene of the protests, ready to report on whatever was going on.

She and her team had arrived in a car, parked beside the road and even shared water with other journalists.

A video shared on Instagram by the journalist showed the moment a teargas canister came straight at their car and hit the windscreen, causing damage.
Everything seemed calm, but in just a second, the journalist and her counterparts could be heard in panic mode as they urged each other to get out.
The luckiest person was a cameraman just in front of the car that was recording the commotion and dashed to get out of the way.
He missed it by inches, and it would have gotten him on his head, which would have caused some serious injuries.
In her caption, she noted how it was a normal day as she wenrt to cover the 2025/26 National Budget reading that was taking place in parliament, but she was not expecting what happen.
"Started off like any other day blazer on, mic in hand, ready to cover Budget Day. Just another normal day in the life of a journalist. But then… Mandamano happened! #Gratefulforlife," she wrote.
On her Instagram stories, Fridah showed the huge damage that was caused to the windscreen and also a photo of an injury to her hand.
She added a caption, thanking all those who were concerned about her and affirming that she got first aid.
"Thanks to all who have checked on me I don't take it for granted...I got some first aid I'm good. #MunguNiMkuu," she wrote.

What did IPOA say about Albert Ojwang's murder?
Earlier, it was reported that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) had made progress with the investigations into Albert Ojwang's murder.

Chairperson Issack Hassan confirmed that they had taken statements from 23 witnesses, including officers who arrested Ojwang.
