The banter started after reports emerged that Kenyan fans had “accidentally” bought tickets to Tanzania’s clash after the ticketing site crashed during attempts to purchase seats for Kenya’s game.
This sparked speculation online that Kenyans wanted to ensure Tanzania would face Morocco in an empty stadium as revenge for past banter.
The rivalry can be traced back to when Tanzanian fans mocked Kenya ahead of their group-stage clash against Morocco, only for Harambee Stars to stun the North Africans and silence their critics.
How much did Samia Suluhu award Taifa Stars?
In the latest twist, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu announced a KSh 10 million reward to the Taifa Stars as motivation ahead of their Morocco clash.
This is in addition to the KSh 51 million pledge she made earlier, if the team goes on to win the tournament, along with her signature Fedha ya Mama prize for every goal scored.
While the gesture was meant to inspire the Tanzanian squad, Kenyans quickly turned it into fuel for online banter.
Many compared Suluhu’s promises to those made by President William Ruto, who has pledged significantly larger rewards for Harambee Stars.
President Ruto’s pledges include KSh 1 million for every win, KSh 500,000 for a draw, and a whopping KSh 2.5 million each for their last group-stage game against Zambia.
On top of that, the Kenyan president promised an eye-watering KSh 600 million if the Harambee Stars lift the CHAN 2024 trophy.
So far, Harambee Stars have pocketed KSh 5 million from President Ruto.

His remarks upset many Tanzanians, who in turn directed a warning of their own to Kenya about their game with Madagascar.
