A video circulating on social media captures the moment police officers handcuffed the businessman outside the Milimani Law Courts.

Is Khalif Kairo criminal?

Dressed sharply in a suit and clutching his phone, Kairo appeared composed as his hands were cuffed, a stark contrast to the mounting accusations against him.

Sources privy to the incident revealed that Kairo was arrested following a fresh complaint from a disgruntled client.

The client accused him of taking full payment for a BMW luxury vehicle but failing to deliver it, prompting the police to take swift action.

Why was Khalif Kairo granted bail?

On January 14, he was released on a KSh 1 million cash bail in each of two separate criminal cases, amounting to a total of KSh 2 million, after spending three days in custody.

He faced accusations of defrauding his clients of over KSh 5 million by falsely promising to facilitate the purchase of motor vehicles for them.

While granting Kairo bail, Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina encouraged the involved parties to consider an out-of-court settlement, citing the nature of the charges as misdemeanours.

Onyina noted that there was no compelling reason to deny Kairo bond, adding that he did not consider the accused a flight risk.

Kairo was charged with two counts of cheating under section 315 of the Penal Code.

For each count, the court offered a cash bail of KSh 1 million, with a bond option as an alternative.

According to the prosecution, Kairo allegedly deceived Dona Ayalo Okoth into transferring KSh 2,984,998 into his business account for a Subaru Outback, knowing that the promise was false.

In another instance, Kairo's company, Kai and Karo Limited, reportedly collected KSh 2,145,150 to facilitate the importation of a Honda Vezel Hybrid from Japan, but the transaction failed.

Despite the allegations, Kairo maintained his innocence before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina.
