Why was Sonko angry?

Taking to social media, the politician and philanthropist called out a friend who reversed a KSh 10,000 M-Pesa transaction sent during a night out.

According to Sonko, the incident unfolded during a casual evening of fun, where he and his friends were out making merry.

In a bid to impress the women present, one of Sonko’s friends offered to contribute to the bill by sending him KSh 10,000 on M-Pesa, a gesture clearly meant to show off, not necessity.

“He saw us spending and decided to prove to the women around him that he also had money. Hawa ndio fake buddies. How do you send Mpesa to a friend ? Afterwards, you call Safaricom for reversal? Shame on you," Sonko said.

However, the situation took a dramatic turn the following morning when Sonko received a call from Safaricom, alerting him to a request to reverse the transaction.

Sonko explained that the call shocked him, questioning why someone would willingly send money only to later claim they had been conned.

"He volunteered to send me KSh 10,000 to impress his women without me asking. In the morning, he decided to reverse. I want to ask him, mimi nakaa kukosa KSh 10,000?” Sonko fumed, all while flaunting the expensive designer brands he was wearing to drive his point home.

The former governor made it clear that he never asked for the money and criticised his friend for acting dishonestly.

“If you don’t have money, just say you don’t. Stop behaving like a conman,” he said firmly, adding that the cash would be better spent helping mama mbogas in need.

Sonko even contacted Safaricom customer care live, urging them not to process the reversal.

He believes the transaction was made in bad faith and intended to damage his reputation.

To further prove that he was far from broke, Sonko displayed his M-Pesa statements and account balances from multiple phones.

“The bill was mine, but you decided to show off. Hii pesa nitaenda kupea mama mboga mia tano tano,” he said.

Did Sonko's car run out of fuel?

In a separate incident involving his finances, the politician stirred online chatter after his high-end Lexus LX-570 ran out of fuel.

The unexpected stop happened on February 23 while he was out enjoying a Sunday drive.

Sonko voiced his frustration, saying it was shocking that even he could be caught off guard by rising fuel costs.
