Does Joy Ohon know Kiswahili?

However, at one point during the interview, her lack of grasp of Kiswahili came up.

The host, Obinna, posed a Swahili proverb, and Joy’s response tickled many.

"Aliye na macho haambiwi nini?" he asked.

Instead of saying tazama, Joy responded by saying:

"Kuona."

Her response caught Obinna by surprise, and he repeated the saying.

"I did not do Swahili," she defended herself.

Confident in her grasp of the national language, Joy challenged Obinna to pose another challenge.

"Mayai haina mlango," she said, making Obinna and the audience laugh.
"Mgaagaa na upwa...?" Obinna asked, but Joy could not respond.

She explained that she learned basic Kiswahili in school.

"Mtaka cha mvunguni..." Obinna persisted.
"Ni mganga," Joy said, once again cracking up the audience.

The video amused Kenyans, who likened her passable Kiswahili knowledge to renowned journalist Jeff Koinange and Mike Sonko’s daughter, Sandra Mbuvi.

Does Jeff Koinange speak Kiswahili?

Veteran journalist Jeff Koinange always struggles to speak the national language..

Koinange has, on many occasions, left Kenyans in stitches whenever he attempts to speak Kiswahili.

The journalist, who attended some of the most prestigious schools across the globe, including Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, New York, is not fluent in Kiswahili.

Videos capturing Koinange struggling to read Kiswahili on air or pronouncing words always amuse Kenyans.

To help him improve his fluency in Kiswahili, Koinange's co-host, Emmanuel Igunza, always teaches him to pronounce words.

The most memorable time when Koinange struggled with Kiswahili was in March 2020, while reporting about COVID-19.

"Leo tunaongea juu ya Coronavirus. Ayaya corona imechapa watu wengi, karibu elfu tatu dunaniani na wengine karibu elfu themanini wako infected (Today we are discussing Coronavirus. The disease has affected so many people, nearly 3,000 have died while 80,000 infected)," he said while standing beside his then co-host, Victoria Rubadiri.
