The clip captured a moment as the First Family disembarked from a plane in Vietnam. It elicited mixed reactions online.

In the video, Brigitte touched Macron's face as they walked together, prompting a surprised reaction from the president before he turned to wave at the press.

Despite the seemingly innocent gesture, the video went viral beyond borders.

Did Brigitte slap Macron?

Speaking to reporters in Hanoi, Macron criticised the exaggerated reactions to the video.

The president criticised its use as a tool for sparking unnecessary debate:

Emmanuel Macron: Reactions as French president is slapped in face by wife Brigitte

“There’s a video showing me joking and teasing my wife and somehow that becomes a sort of geo-planetary catastrophe, with people even coming up with theories to explain it. The videos are all real, and yes, sometimes people tamper with them, but people are attributing all kinds of nonsense to them... I was bickering, or rather joking, with my wife. It’s nothing.”

He also warned that this was not the first time recently that footage of him had been distorted by what he described as crackpots seeking to spread misinformation.

Official Statement from Macron’s Office

As captured in a statement shared by The Shades Room, Macron’s office offered a similar explanation, describing the moment as one of lightheartedness and closeness between the president and his wife before the official start of their trip.

"It was a moment where the president and his wife were decompressing one last time before the start of the trip by horsing around. It’s a moment of complicity. It was all that was needed to give ammunition to the conspiracy theorists," the statement read.
