Why are Kenyans and Tanzanians beefing?

It all began after a delegation of Kenyan activists led by Martha Karua was denied entry into Tanzania and deported without explanation.

The team had travelled to attend opposition leader Tundu Lissu’s court proceedings, where he faces treason charges.

The situation worsened after prominent Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi went missing in Tanzania, only to be found days later battered and bruised.

President Samia Suluhu added fuel to the already raging fire by defending her government’s decision, insisting that Tanzania would not allow foreign influencers to disrupt the country’s peace.

This stance was backed by Tanzanian lawmakers who launched scathing attacks on Kenyan youth, labelling them mentally inferior and claiming there was “nothing to learn” from them.

Kenyan netizens quickly rallied, especially on X, where they famously unearthed and began 'greeting; the outspoken Tanzanian MPs.

However, the real comedy gold emerged on TikTok, where content creators jumped into the mix with viral skits that turned the political tension into pure comedy.

In another viral video, Mokaya parodied Tanzanian MPs, especially Maryam Omar, who in parliament suggested that Martha Karua should have been taught a lesson and that Boniface Mwangi 'was not beaten enough.'

Another TikToker, Mluo, took things up a notch by playing both Suluhu and President William Ruto in a fictional video call.
