How was Obayi Patrick robbed at protests?
Kenyans took to the streets on the anniversary of the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests to pay homage to the fallen, call for an end to police brutality, and demand better governance.
Obayi Patrick, a choir master and content creator, joined Kenyans in the streets of Nairobi.
He posted a video of himself recording a selfie while chanting alongside other Kenyans.
With a whistle, Obayi was spotted at the Haille Sellasie roundabout.
However, his excitement quickly turned into despair.
He posted a video of a group of young men stealing from someone.
"See, there are others over there stealing," a woman recording the clip said.
The group roughed up the man and stole his phone and shoes, as the stunned woman recorded the scene.
Obayi said that he was the person in the video.
"I was roughed up and robbed, my phone and shoes stolen during today's protests.
But I am okay now," he wrote.
Kenyans on social media reacted by saying:
Therealbrownii:
“Sometimes people should point it out and say: ‘We’re recording this, leave him alone.’
Otherwise, this kind of thing becomes normalised; that’s exactly how police violence started, too.”
yun_aturkana:
“Just say where we will contribute because we can't fail to enjoy your content because there is no phone.”
Loiawat:
“Thank God you're okay. Thanks for going out.”

In other news, a video showing musician Arrow Bwoy being whipped by a police officer during the protests attracted widespread outrage online.
In the footage, Arrow and fellow artist Khaligraph Jones were seen walking in the streets as police followed closely behind.
Khaligraph told the officers that the singer was with him and urged him to move ahead. Despite the peaceful nature of the protest, the police lobbed tear gas and struck Arrow with a whip as he raised his hands in surrender.
