Famed Kenyan footballers Victor Wanyama, his brother McDonald Mariga and their family are still mourning the death of their beautiful mother, Mildred Ayiemba Wanyama.

The family held a memorial mass, which was attended by the football fraternity and a few government officials.

TUKO.co.ke shared five fascinating facts about Mildred, who gave the country two of the best footballers who also played internationally.

1. Who were Mildred Wanyama's kids?

Mildred was born in 1959 in Ebusiralo village and was the firstborn of 13 siblings. Her family termed her a leader who led with quiet strength and a generous heart.

She began her education journey at Ebusiralo Primary School before later proceeding to St. Peter's Mixed Secondary School in Kisumu.

Together with her husband, Noah Agoya, they raised 16 children in a blended family and had over 15 grandchildren.

Among her children were footballers Victor and McDonald, who have played locally and internationally.

2. What job did Wanyama's mum do?

In her career and service life, Mildred began working at Kibos Cotton Millers in Kisumu before moving to Nairobi's Mbotela estate.

She started as a cleaner at the Railways dispensary but later, through hard work, rose through the ranks, where she served as a clerk at the Kenya Railways Training Institute, and Senior Clerk at the Railways Workshop.

She also served as a ticketing officer and a senior housing officer in Makongeni and later at the Railways headquarters.

3. Mildred Wanyama was a netball player

The late Wanyama's mum was also a netball lover, and she played the game with so much passion, which saw her rise to the national team's leadership.

Mildred managed national teams and eventually became the President of the Kenya Netball Association.

She was hailed for her record as a track athlete and her success at running and winning short races.

4. Was Wanyama's mother a preacher?

The renowned footballer's mother was a reverend whose ministry was rooted in service and singing.

She was actively involved in various choir groups throughout her life, including the St. Stephen's Choir.

Mildred later pursued ordination and was appointed Associate Pastor at the Church of God in Kawangware before later transferring to the Mbotela branch.

She was still active in ministry when her health deteriorated, where she led prayers and offered counsel.
