Do sleeping pills help with handling grief?

Counselling psychologist Esther Njenga noted that people go through different stages while handling grief.

According to her, relying on short-term coping mechanisms should be supplemented with long-term effects to avoid dire consequences.

"People dealing with grief may be prescribed sleeping pills for short-term relief, especially if insomnia is severe and affecting their health. However, long-term use can lead to dependence, reduced effectiveness, memory issues, and worsened mental health over time. It's generally better to combine short-term medicat!on with therapy, healthy sleep habits, and emotional support," she said.
