Nominated senator Karen Nyamu has once again caused a stir online, this time, not over politics or love life drama, but over her admiration for George Ruto’s flashy new matatu, Mood.

The matatu, launched in a high-octane event at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Friday, July 19, has been the talk of town for its never-before-seen features, including bucket seats, a DJ booth, and solar panels.
Speaking exclusively to TUKO.co.ke, communications consultant Wambua Ndambuki explained that while humour and relatability are increasingly becoming part of modern political branding, leaders must remain conscious of their roles in shaping public discourse.
He noted that Nyamu’s personality-driven approach might resonate with a younger, urban demographic, but it risks eroding the dignity of public office when not carefully managed.
“Kenyans appreciate a leader who is relatable and unfiltered, but there’s a fine line between being authentic and appearing unserious. When public figures engage in online banter, especially around sensitive topics like public transport safety or class dynamics, it can fuel unnecessary division or trivialise serious governance concerns,” said Ndambuki.
Why was Karen Nyamu beefing with fan?
The matatu, custom-designed to stand out, has quickly earned the name Kenya 1, the new king of Nairobi’s matatu culture.
Senator Nyamu could not resist joining the hype. She took to Facebook, posting a photo of the stylish ride with a cheeky caption that read:
"Hii nganya nayo lazima nipande squad ka mbili hadi maskio ifanye ndrrr niskie fiti. Millenials wa Eastlando can relate."
Her nostalgic and cheeky post, meant to celebrate the matatu culture, quickly attracted attention. However, it was not all friendly.
One bold fan, Benjamin Anasswa, took the chance to throw shade, bringing up her history with men and quipping that maybe she was eyeing George himself.
Nyamu, never one to let a jab slide, quickly clapped back, writing:
"Bro hata dem yako hawezi mind," suggesting that even his girlfriend would want to be with George.
Her savage comeback left netizens in stitches, flooding the comments with reactions to her cheeky banter.

Why did George Ruto’s matatu Mood spark backlash?
Just two days after its flashy launch, Mood was already causing a stir online and on the streets.
There were reports of heavy traffic, dangerous stunts, and sadly, a tout is said to have died after being hit by another matatu in the city during the day it was launched.
On social media, critics raised eyebrows over the matatu’s flashy design and questioned how much money went into the build, with some even suggesting that it was the proceeds of looted government coffers.
A viral TikTok video added to the uproar, showing the matatu stuck in traffic, music blaring, and people hanging dangerously out of windows.
Tension rose when a police vehicle tried to pass, and a crowd warned the officer not to interfere, saying the vehicle belongs to the president’s son and he could lose his job even for scratching it.
Karen Nyamu claps back at fan over 'poor' dressing code
In a different story, the nominated senator, whose clapbacks always left her critics humiliated, told off a fan who criticised her dress code.
The mother of three shared a photo in a short khaki dress, showing acres of flesh. She captioned the photo with a Bible verse, quoting Genesis 12:2.
An unimpressed fan commented on the photo, urging Nyamu to dress like a leader, but that didn't go well with her.
Nyamu clapped back at the fan, asking them to send the appropriate dress for a leader.
Surprisingly, a few days later, she stepped out in a long red dress, and when fans commented, advising her to wear such clothes, she liked their comments.
