When did Deya go to the UK?
The controversial preacher, known for 'miracle babies', left Kenya for the United Kingdom in the mid-1990s, where he founded Gilbert Deya Ministries, a registered church and charitable centre that opened several other branches in the UK and Africa.
Deya was a charismatic, energetic, and persuasive preacher who won the hearts of many congregants both locally and internationally.
He rose to infamy in the 2000s when he claimed he had the spiritual power to help infertile women conceive "miracle babies".
Women who were desperate for children started flocking to his church in London, hoping to conceive through Deya's spiritual powers.
However, it was not long before authorities in the UK suspected his conduct and opened investigations into his operations, after he was linked to child trafficking.
He faced other legal cases related to the exploitation of congregants, particularly through the sale of Olive oil, which he falsely claimed had healing properties.
At one point, a UK Member of Parliament, David Lammy, described him as "a modern-day snake-oil salesman" and called for the deregistration of his church.
He was arrested and extradited to Kenya in August 2017 to face fraud and child trafficking charges, which the prosecution failed to prove.
Since then, Deya has been living a quiet and private life, courting no controversy or public attention.
