The phone recording that surfaced online on Sunday, July 27, allegedly captures Maina threatening Nginda Ward MCA Mwangi wa Mapesa.

What was said in the leaked audio?

The audio sparked outrage and mixed reactions from Kenyans, particularly those familiar with Maina's recent string of public spats.

In the recording, a voice said to be Maina’s is heard lashing out at Mwangi in a mix of English and Kikuyu, sounding visibly agitated and issuing a series of chilling threats laced with profanities and personal jabs.

“You have spoken about beans, but I have not spoken about WaMaua. If I target you, I will dismantle you like a... Go away. I am going to dismantle you and you know I do not mince my words. You are going to know me. And you can record and take it to your grandmother, or to the police, or wherever you want. I have dared you," she said.

The vulgar utterances even went as far as mocking the MCA’s age and masculinity, suggesting he has yet to sire children.

Why was Mwangi being threatened?

Speaking to Kameme FM’s Muthoni wa Kirumba in a live call, Mwangi narrated the events leading up to the explosive exchange.

According to the MCA, the incident occurred shortly after the two leaders attended a church service where they were invited to speak.

Mwangi claimed that he used the opportunity to question the ongoing government-sponsored empowerment initiatives in the region, popularly symbolised by the distribution of beans.

“I simply said funds being used in these so-called empowerment programmes should instead go towards improving the education sector,” Mwangi explained.

He said he believed his comment, especially using the term ‘beans’, now linked to such programmes and often used to criticise Maina, may have rubbed her the wrong way.

"I was called by Mheshimiwa Betty Maina from her personal number. She told me that even if I am speaking about beans, I should not mention her, and I had not even mentioned her unless she changed her name," he shared.

He continued:

"She told me that if I am to speak about beans again, I should be cautious because she is not like Mheshimiwa Wamaua, because she will dismantle me and other vulgar utterances. I did not respond."

On her part, Maina took to social media, sharing a short and cryptic message, writing:

"Wasn't me."
