The late pop icon’s influence remains as strong as ever, with his name and memories commanding respect, as shown by the recent sale of one of his personal items.

A glittery sock worn by Jackson during a concert in France in the 1990s has sold for more than KSh 1 million in a French auction.

How was Michael Jackson's sock discovered?

The item was originally discarded after a performance on his History World Tour in 1997.

It attracted massive interest and was sold on Wednesday, July 30.

Yahoo.com reports that the sock was found by a technician near Jackson's dressing room after his concert in Nimes, a city in the southern part of France.

Jackson had worn white athletic socks adorned with rhinestones during the show, and this particular sock became a coveted piece of memorabilia for die-hard fans.

A specialist website confirmed that the sock had been worn during Jackson’s famous performance of Billie Jean, one of his biggest hits.

The sock, which had been kept in relatively good condition, showed signs of ageing, with the rhinestones yellowed and stains from years of wear.

Despite its aged appearance, the item’s historical importance and connection to the King of Pop’s iconic performance made it a highly sought-after collectable.

“It really is an exceptional object even a cult one for Michael Jackson fans,” the auctioneer commented.

The sock, initially valued between KSh 440,164 and KSh 515,000 ($3,400- $4,500), eventually sold for KSh 1.1 million at the Nimes auction house, well above its expected value.

This latest sale follows other notable transactions of Jackson’s memorabilia.

In 2009, a Macau gaming resort paid KSh 5 million for a glittery glove that Jackson wore during his groundbreaking moonwalk performance in 1983.

In 2023, a hat worn by Jackson just before that famous performance sold for over KSh 10 million at a Paris auction.

Jackson died in 2009 at the age of 50.

The recent auction of the glittery sock ignited massive reactions on social media.
