The musician reflected on the challenges she faced as an upcoming singer and revealed the inspiration behind her latest track, Umenipendelea.

Zion Njeri recounts challeenges in music industry

In an emotional interview with TUKO.co.ke, Zion recounted discovering her talent at a young age in church and navigating the often harsh gospel music industry.

"My mother discovered my singing talent when she was in Class 7. She helped her nuture it by giving her a platform to sing in Church where she was a reverend. The death of my mother in 2020 pushed me to embark in music as a career," Zion said.

She revealed that her early days in the studio were not easy.

"I was chased out during a studio session because I was an upcoming artiste. They prioritised established artistes over upcomings. I had to stay there for 12 hours until they were done with established singers. After the wait, they told me it was impossible to record that day and I had to come the following day," she shared.

Zion also spoke about rejection from her colleagues, which left emotional scars.

"I was ready to go for a mission with the team I was working with back then, and they chased me out from their car saying I wasn’t in their plan. I used to go with them every time. Waah, that really broke me. Those are the main challenges I faced," she said.

Despite these setbacks, Zion’s resilience and faith have seen her rise in the gospel music scene.

She has built a portfolio of powerful songs, including Shukrani, Unatosha, and Utukufu.

Her new release, Umenipendelea, continues this streak, celebrating God’s unmerited favour and love.

What inspired Zion Njeri's new song Umenipendelea?

The track features Obby Alpha and reflects Zion’s personal testimony of divine grace.

"I have seen how God has favoured me and loved me. I decided to put it in the form of a song and featured Obby Alpha," she explained.

She added that her mother played a key role in encouraging and praying for her:

"She prayed for favour in my life. Little did I know one day I will come and sing #Umenipendelea."

When asked about her creative process, Zion revealed that most of her songs are inspired by the Holy Spirit, although sometimes ideas come through beats and melodies.

Elsewhere, gospel musician Mark thanked veteran Tanzanian singer Rose Muhando for supporting him.
