Is Meningitis deadly?

Meningitis is a life-threatening illness that occurs when the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord, known as the meninges, become inflamed.

The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that the condition can be triggered by bacterial, viral, or fungal infections.

Among these, bacterial meningitis is considered the most dangerous, as it progresses rapidly and can lead to death if not treated promptly.

Survivors may also face long-term effects such as hearing loss, brain damage, or learning difficulties.
