According to statements by series creator and writer Tony Gilroy, the second instalment has been decided to be the final chapter. The concluding episode is set to stream on Disney+ on 13 May.

Why is Andor ending after 2 seasons?

Andor is concluding after two seasons due to the scale of production, despite initially being planned as a five-season series that would lead directly into the events of Rogue One. According to series creator Tony Gilroy, the decision to shorten the series was influenced by the scale and production demands of the first season.

"Originally we thought 'oh, maybe we’ll do five seasons,' but it’s just the scale of the show,"

Gilroy explained that during filming, which took place amid COVID-19 challenges, it became evident that the show's scope was far greater than anticipated. Gilroy noted that the sheer effort required to produce each season made it unsustainable to continue with the original plan.

He also mentioned that the extended production timeline was a concern due to the physical demands and time involved, which particularly affected the lead actor, Diego Luna.

Ultimately, Disney supported the revised approach, allowing the creators to condense the storyline and bring the narrative closer to Rogue One. Gilroy described the shift as a unique creative challenge, suggesting that such a narrative structure may not have been attempted before.

In a separate interview with Brazilian television in April 2022, Adriano Goldman, the cinematographer for Andor, stated that the original plan for five seasons had been revised to three initially. The number was later further cut down to two.

How much did Andor’s production cost?

Disney’s public disclosures revealed that Andor Season 2 cost well over $290.9 million to produce, bringing the combined production budget for both seasons to more than $645 million. According to the company's filings, this figure marks the highest annual expenditure ever recorded for a Star Wars project.

The amount spent to produce the show surpasses the $280.7 million spent on Star Wars: The Last Jedi during the nearly 11-month period ending 16 March 2019. It also exceeds the $243.8 million allocated to The Force Awakens, the first Star Wars film released by Disney, during the financial year ending 15 November 2016.

The second season’s budget was also impacted by delays caused by the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Tony Gilroy, the series creator, confirmed that he suspended all writing-related work from 1 May 2023 due to the WGA strike. Production on Season 2 was also temporarily halted on 20 July 2023 as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Where was Andor filmed?

Production on Andor was centred in the UK, with principal filming carried out at Pinewood Studios in London. Unlike previous Star Wars series, the production chose not to utilise StageCraft’s virtual sets, instead relying on physical sets and real-world locations to achieve a more grounded visual style reminiscent of Rogue One. Filming commenced in late November 2020 under stringent COVID-19 safety measures across all filming locations
