The man, whose identity was not immediately established, is said to have made a stop outside the Supreme Court building coming from City Hall.
According to the Judiciary, he was carrying some documents and a bottle with a liquid.
On making a stop at the court, he dropped his documents before pouring the liquid, believed to be a petroleum product, on himself, before fishing out a lighter to ignite himself.
The scene attracted the security operatives who had been looking on; they rushed to put the fire out.
What Judiciary said after man burnt himself
Despite the swift rescue, the man sustained burns.
"In the meantime, the Police Officer in charge of security at the Supreme Court reached out to the KICC Police Station and some police officers were sent over. The Nairobi County Government was quickly contacted and provided an ambulance. The police officers put the man in the ambulance and said they were taking him to Kenyatta National Hospital. The police also took away the documents and the burnt clothes," a statement from the Judiciary read.
"It is expected that once the man is treated and out of danger, the police will interrogate him to reveal the cause of his shocking action. Meanwhile, the Judiciary is taking a keen interest in the matter, with a view to establishing if his drastic action could be linked to a court matter. We wish the man a speedy recovery," the statement read on.
In other news, a dramatic and almost unbelievable incident recently played out at the Kibera Law Courts when a suspect was caught on CCTV seemingly stealing a prosecutor’s phone, right in the middle of his own court hearing.
The brazen act left courtroom officials stunned, as it unfolded while the suspect was being prosecuted for an equally serious crime.
The suspect, identified as Joseph Ombogo, was in court over a defilement case when he committed the alleged theft.
How did suspect steal prosecutor's phone in court?
The crime came to light when the prosecutor realised her phone was missing after briefly stepping out during the session.
The prosecutor noticed her phone's disappearance and alerted court officials, prompting a review of the courtroom’s CCTV footage.
Upon careful examination, the security team and court officials were shocked to discover that Ombogo was allegedly responsible.
The footage showed him allegedly pocketing the phone, seemingly believing he would go unnoticed.
With evidence in hand, the court officials and investigators launched a search for Ombogo, tracking him down to Kawangware, a residential area not far from the courthouse.
Upon his arrest, he led law enforcement officers to his suspected accomplice, a woman suspected of operating a phone theft syndicate.
When questioned about the incident, Ombogo defended himself, insisting that he had not stolen the phone but merely picked it up.
