In a statement on Thursday, May 1, the president expressed his shock at the killing of the outspoken Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party lawmaker.

In a condolence message, Ruto expressed sorrow over the lawmaker’s death and offered prayers for his family and constituents.

"May God grant the family and the people of Kasipul strength to bear with the loss of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were," President Ruto said.

The head of state urged the National Police Service (NPS) to carry out thorough investigations into the shooting incident, adding that those behind Were's murder must be arrested and charged.

"We urge the police to conduct a thorough investigation into this incident. Those responsible must be held to account," Ruto stated.

Earlier, Raila Odinga-led ODM had also called on the investigative agencies to ensure the assassins are arrested.

"While we join his constituents, the people of the great county of Homabay, his family, colleagues and friends in mourning, we call on the police to investigate the shooting incident and bring the culprits to book. We shall issue a comprehensive statement in due course," the ODM party said.

As reported by TUKO.co.ke, Were was fatally shot around 7:30 p.m. near the City Mortuary roundabout along Ngong Road.

The ODM MP was targeted by an unknown gunman riding a motorbike and was declared dead upon arrival at a Nairobi hospital.

According to police reports, two unidentified assailants on a motorbike approached the MP’s car and opened fire.

While the MP's driver and bodyguard were present, neither sustained any injuries in the attack.

Authorities noted that the accuracy of the shooting suggested the perpetrators were likely trained assassins.

The attack took place quickly as the MP’s vehicle was making its way through the roundabout near City Mortuary, towards Valley Road.
