A Facebook statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) shared a chronology of events leading to the drug haul bust.
How Wanjiku was arrested at JKIA
Caroline Wanjiku Mwangi was apprehended by detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit shortly before boarding her flight.
Acting on routine checks, officers flagged Wanjiku for further screening, leading to the discovery of two concealed bags within her luggage.
Upon inspection, the detectives uncovered a white, powdery substance meticulously wrapped in yellow cellotape.
Field tests conducted on-site confirmed the substance to be c*caine, weighing approximately 1.3 kilograms.
How old is Wanjiku?
The suspect was immediately taken into custody and is currently being held at the JKIA Police Station as investigations continue.
The 25-year-old is expected to be arraigned in court to face charges related to drug smuggling.
Authorities have secured the seized narcotics as exhibits and lauded the vigilance of airport security in intercepting the illicit cargo.
Wanjiku’s would-be escape to Goa has instead turned into a staycation behind bars—courtesy of the keen-eyed Anti-Narcotics detectives.

Social media reactions
Kenyans on social media took to the comments section to express disappointment at the rising cases of Kenyan women being caught in drug-related scandals.
Many opined that the high cost of living and low employment rates were driving victims into get-rich-quick schemes.
Asman Mumia
"Ever since Nduta was spared, we have seen more ladies being arrested for drug smuggling. She must have ratted."
Calvin Nyamuoda
She is lucky. In India, they hang drug mules. Here in Kenya, she has an opportunity to engage Danstan Omari to get her out of bond and delay her case till 2070."
Around the Rift Valley
"This shows how bad the economic situation in Kenya is that people still consider drug smuggling an acceptable risk, despite the death sentence that comes with it."
Samkiroko Mugwe:
"I can't believe we are bursting coke this frequently in Kenya. It's a sad thing. Kenya is a conduit for drug smugglers to the rest of the world."
Another Kenyan woman arrested in India
This comes one month after another Kenyan woman was arrested in India while smuggling drugs worth KSh 270 million.
The 43-year-old, identified as Emily Kanini Rodha, was apprehended by customs officials at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMI) in Mumbai.
Kanini raised suspicion due to her nervous demeanour, prompting the officials to inspect her luggage, where they discovered 1,789 grams of c*caine concealed at the bottom.
