What happened in the CCTV footage?
The footage, dated April 24, shows a man who had just alighted from a matatu at an undesignated stop. While waving to someone across the road, he was suddenly struck by a speeding boda boda rider.
The impact caused both the man and the motorcyclist to fall, with the rider and his motorbike tumbling into a roadside ditch.
The victim, visibly shaken, managed to get up and sit down at the roadside, watching the scene unfold.
While the pedestrian appeared to have survived the crash with minor injuries, the condition of the rider was not immediately clear from the footage.
Viewers were quick to weigh in on the video; many pointing out traffic violations that may have led to the crash. The road in question has a visible bump meant to slow down vehicles.
The matatu that dropped off the man had slowed down, as did a saloon car behind it, but the boda boda rider did not, resulting in the collision.
The incident adds to the growing number of road accidents involving boda bodas across the country, raising fresh calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and designated drop-off points for public service vehicles.
How did Kenyans react to the boda crash?
Social media users expressed frustration over the common disregard for traffic rules, especially by boda boda operators.
Mike Rono
"Matatu was wrong, angemshukisha Kwa stage. The man was also wrong for jaywalking absentmindedly. Mtu wa boda could have slowed down, but it's unfair to blame him, he was on his lane going to his destination."
Abass Kajojo
"That accident could have been easily avoided. Where do most of these riders rush to? They are always in a hurry, heading to their destination!"
Dennis Muriithi Kubai
"Boda rider was in the wrong. As a qualified rider, he ought to have anticipated the pedestrian's moves and seen the best way not to hit him; including slowing down or even stopping and letting him cross the road. As a machine operator, you are considered to be of sobber mind and owe the pedestrian duty of care."
Jackie Gacheru
"The rider could see the guy from a distance unless he was high on something or absent-minded on the road. Tena nani hupita bump na such speed?"
Chege Elijah
"As much as the pedestrian wasn't paying attention, much of the fault lies with the rider because he was oncoming and had a clear view ahead. The big puzzle is why he didn't slow down or apply the brakes."
Binghi
"Both the boda and the pedestrian are at fault: what is the pedestrian doing on the road distracted? And the boda guy: there's a bump there for a reason. The bump didn't even slow him down."
Ouma Mathew
"Both are wrong, the boda guy with all that speed where was he heading to? And the place was open. He could have seen the guy."
