Inside Beatrice Elachi's powerful prayer

During the National Prayer Breakfast at Safari Park on Wednesday, May 28, Elachi highlighted how social media has corrupted the minds of many youths.

She prayed that God would give the Members of Parliament courage to sort out the mess created by the dependency on social media in the country.

"Our youth are hopeless, and we pray that the spirit of social media running our country is sorted out. Father, that spirit, my Father in heaven, we want to confess as the legislators that indeed we must sort out that sector. And, Father, we shall have the courage to stand and believe in what is good for the country, what is good for our generation, what is good for the future of Kenya," Elachi passionately prayed.

In her prayer, the ODM lawmaker lamented how youths in the country have rebelled against their parents.

She asked for forgiveness on behalf of other parents who have failed to discipline their children as envisioned in the Bible.

"We became parents that were unable. We felt it was good for our children to be who they are. Today, they have rebelled. We are now crying as parents. Father, forgive us. That indeed the Bible says as parents we shall have to discipline our children for them to have the glory of God, for them to have order to take over. Today, Father, we stand in the gap for our children, Father," she added in her prayer.

Why should government regulate social media?

Meanwhile, Francis Atwoli, the secretary general of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Kenya), called for tighter regulation of social media platforms.

During a COTU shop stewards' meeting held on April 5, Atwoli urged President Ruto’s administration to enforce laws controlling social media to curb its growing misuse.

Atwoli pointed out that young people across the country have been abusing social media platforms due to the absence of legal restrictions.

He warned that without regulation, Kenya risks losing employers and investors, which could trigger an economic downturn.

The long-serving COTU leader advised the government to take a cue from China, which he said enforces strict laws, including a ban on WhatsApp.
