The Thursday, June 19, afternoon accident involved two Public Service Vehicle (PSV) matatus and a private car.

How many people died in the Daraja Moja accident?

Kisii Central Base Commander Collins Omondi confirmed the crash, which he said occurred in the Daraja Moja area near Kisii National Polytechnic.

Emergency responders arrived promptly, and efforts to manage the situation were made, with photos from the scene showing volunteers pulling passengers trapped in the vehicles through windows.

Omondi, who visited the scene immediately after the accident, said 19 other people sustained various injuries and were rushed to the nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.

Kisii Central OCPD Musa Imamai said preliminary investigations showed the Nissan matatu lost control and hit three other vehicles, all headed to Kisii Town

Imamai disclosed that two women died on the spot, and their bodies were taken to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary.

“Two women died in the incident. Nine people sustained serious injuries, while 10 others had minor injuries. All the injured were rushed to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital,” Imamai said.

According to witnesses, both matatus were speeding and overtaking each other moments before a loud crash was heard.

Photos from the scene showed how serious the accident was as one of the PSV matatus was badly damaged.

The police boss urged motorists to drive cautiously during the ongoing rainy season and warned against reckless driving.

When did the Moi University bus crash?

In other news, a bus carrying Moi University students on an academic trip crashed at Namba Kapiyo, along the Kisumu–Bondo Road, on Tuesday, June 17.

According to the statement by the university management, the bus was carrying Fourth-Year students from the School of Arts and Social Sciences, who were on an academic field trip in the Nyanza region.

The administration coordinated the necessary logistics and support for the affected students, with several being rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Police report indicated that the tragic accident involved three vehicles: the university bus, a Toyota Fortuner registered to the County Government of Siaya, and a Toyota Noah.

At least 15 students sustained seriously injuries and were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, Kisumu for treatment.

Another group of 13 students sustained minor injuries and were treated at Kombewa Sub-County Hospital. Fortunately, all occupants of the County Government of Siaya vehicle escaped without harm.

Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander Peter Maina issued a statement confirming the tragic accident.

In his statement, Maina disclosed that controversial preacher Gilbert Deya died on the spot, after he lost control of his vehicle and rammed into the university bus.
