However, this time around, Kenyans disgruntled with President William Ruto’s government used the day to demonstrate.
How many people died during Saba Saba?
Protests took place in several counties and the outskirts of the capital, Nairobi.
Police blocked major roads leading to Nairobi’s Central Business District, turning away motorists and pedestrians trying to access it.
Amid the chaos and bloodshed that saw at least 10 people shot dead, a young woman offered unexpected comic relief.
A video circulating on Instagram depicted a group of youth standing next to a police Land Cruiser, talking to an officer.
Did woman ask police for teargas?
The woman asked the cop why they were not doused with sufficient tear gas.
“We are peaceful protesters, but without tear gas, it's not the same.”
The cop responded by telling her that they had more than enough stock and would not run out anytime soon.
“Then go bring us the pink-colored tear gas,” she said.
They were told that someone was about to stone the police vehicle, but she dissuaded them, instead telling them to do it later.
Her comments cracked up social media influencers and users, who found it humorous. Others expressed frustration with the government.
