Elvis Otieno is believed to have led the raid into the hospital on July 7.
How DCI closed in in suspect who stormed Kitengela hospital
According to the DCI, the suspect was located at the scene after review of the surveillance cameras at the facility.
"Elvis Otieno Owino, identified through CCTV footage as a key suspect in the invasion and malicious property damage at Kitengela Sub-County Hospital during the July 7, 2025, protests, has been apprehended," the DCI said.
A search for him started with the investigators identifying him through the clothes he had worn on the day of the raid.
The suspect led the detectives to his home within Kitengela township, where the clothes he had been captured on the cameras with were identified.
The man now awaits arraignment as detectives pursue more suspects.
"Upon his arrest, Owino led investigators to his rented residence in Noonkopir, where they recovered a black Marvin cap and a grey jacket, items he was captured wearing during the incident. Owino is now in custody as authorities continue to process the case and pursue additional leads to bring other suspects to justice," the DCI reported.
How Kitengela hospital suffered from goons' ruthlessness
The goons took advantage of the Saba Saba protests to storm the hospital and wreak havoc.
Medics were on duty when the unforeseen raid occurred.
They started destroying equipment and attacking anyone they came across.
For their safety, the medics camouflaged themselves as patients to avoid the ruthless gangs.
Property of unknown value was damaged, and injuries were caused to some of the medics.
Despite the commotion, the team in the theatre braved the danger to salvage an expectant mother who was undergoing an operation.
Such instances prompted President William Ruto to sanction the police to shoot and incapacitate the violence culprits infiltrating the protests.
Why Ruto ordered the police to shoot violent protesters
Speaking in Nairobi last week, the president declared that his regime was not going to tolerate lawlessness, as innocent civilians suffer.
Ruto asked the police to put their firearms to use whenever goons charge toward police stations, government installations, private businesses and other establishments with the intent to destroy and kill.
He told the police to aim for the suspects' legs to incapacitate them, not to kill.
After being shot, the suspects would be hospitalised, after which they would be presented before justice.
