What KNH said over patient's alleged murder

The facility confirmed, through an official statement Thursday evening, July 17, that the deceased was discovered inside blood-soaked bedding.

KNH's chief executive officer, William Sigilai, said the body was found at 2 pm, and subsequent examination confirmed the death.

Sigilai did not delve into the circumstances of the death; he said DCI officers were notified and immediately camped at the scene.

"We are deeply saddened to confirm an incident regarding the tragic death of a patient at Kenyatta National Hospital. On the afternoon of 17th July 2025, at around 2 pm, immediately after visiting hours, a patient was discovered in a medical ward in blood-soaked beddings," read the CEO's statement partly.

The deceased's identities would not be immediately revealed.

Sigilai commiserated with the yet-to-be-known bereaved family.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the patient's family during this difficult time. We will provide updates as more information is availed," Sigilai added.

Meanwhile, access to the ward and the adjoining ones was blocked as the detectives documented it as a scene of crime.

Members of the public who had visited their patients would be allowed in a structured manner to control the traffic.

This came five months after a similar incident within the same facility.

It was on February 7 when KNH confirmed the death of Gilberty Kinyua, a 39-year-old who had been admitted to the facility.

The deceased had been transferred to KNH on December 11, 2024, being moved from St. Mary's Hospital in Lang'ata.

How KNH patient met his tragic end

Addressing the National Assembly while responding to the statement sought by Nairobi woman representative Esther Passaris regarding the matter, former health committee chairperson Charles Pukose shared that through his stay at KNH until his last breath, Kinyua had been confined to the same Ward 7B, a unit for neurological care.

Pukose explained that when Kinyua arrived at KNH in December, he was diagnosed with pressure-related wounds likely caused by prolonged immobility.

He suffered from extensive limb complications that left him entirely reliant on assisted care, including feeding through a tube.

Despite his critical condition, as told by Pukose, Kinyua was showing considerable signs of improvement.

On February 6, his status was recorded as stable, and night shift personnel who took over care reported no concerns.
