The country's human rights groups have called out the Kenyan and Tanzanian governments over the alleged abduction of activist Mwagodi Mwabili.

Mwagodi's family announced that he went missing on Wednesday, July 23, in Tanzania, where he worked at a local hotel.
The humanitarian groups, including Amnesty International, the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) and Vocal Africa, expressed their shock over Mwagodi's disappearance.

Amnesty International said that Mwagodi was taken away by unknown men on the day he disappeared, according to eyewitnesses.

"Amnesty International is deeply alarmed by the reported abduction and disappearance of Kenyan human rights activist Mwabili Mwagodi in Tanzania on Wednesday, 23 July 2025. Mwagodi was last seen in Dar es Salaam, where he works for a hospitality company." Amnesty's statement read in part.
Mwagodi, known for his outspoken criticism of political influence in religious institutions and his mobilisation of youth movements in Kenya.
The activist's alleged abduction in Tanzania follows the detention and forced deportations of activist Boniface Mwangi and his Ugandan counterpart Agather Atuhaire.
Following Mwagodi's disappearance, the human rights groups have issued four demands to the Kenyan and Tanzanian governments.
What demands did human rights groups give govt?
The first demand was that the two governments should disclose the whereabouts of the activists and ensure their safety.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding Mwagodi's disappearance should be conducted by the security agents.

Thirdly, harassment of human rights activists should come to an end across the East African border.
Lastly, the international and regional human rights, which include the freedom of movement and expression, should be respected at all costs.
The groups wound up by asserting that exercising the freedom of expression through protests should not be considered a crime whatsoever.
"Mwabili Mwagodi's activism is not a crime. His disappearance, however, is. As a grave violation of human rights, it must be addressed with urgency and accountability. Amnesty International stands in solidarity with Mwabili's family, colleagues, and all those acting for justice and human rights in East Africa," the statement further read.
Did DCI threaten Mwabili Mwagodi's family?
At the same time, the KHRC claimed that detectives visited Mwagodi's family last year and threatened them.

According to Mwagodi's family, this happened after Mwagodi led a demonstration against the head of state during a church service in Nyahururu, Laikipia County.
In response to the threats, the KHRC called on the government to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.
The activist's family stated that Mwagodi was under state surveillance before he was allegedly abducted.
