The lawmaker said the DIG can not return to work without being held accountable for the young man's murder.

"I have also talked about the issue of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat. I heard he is back in the office. He should go home; we are not going to allow him back. A young man died in a police station; he should be charged and jailed," he said.

Lagat was adversely mentioned as the big cheese in the murder of blogger Albert Ojwang, having been the complainant behind the ill-fated arrest of the blogger that ended in his painful death.

On June 4, the DIG lodged a complaint against Ojwang with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The blogger had allegedly posted defamatory content against Lagat on X.

The matter was taken over by the DCI's serious crimes unit, which deployed five of its officers to arrest Ojwang at his native home in Lida Centre, Homa Bay county.

They drove with Ojwang en route to Nairobi.

He was booked insid a cell at the Central Police Station where he was killed.

How Albert Ojwang met his tragic end

Police Constable James Mukhwana was the sentry assigned at the station when Ojwang was brought in.

The officer was arrested on June 12 as the prime suspect in the murder of Ojwang.

Unforeseen, Mukhwana, calling it "My truth", opted to reveal the horrific events to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) blow by blow, seeking to absolve himself of any wrongdoing.

The revelation was immediately after his arraignment at the Milimani Law Courts on June 13.

Who ordered Albert Ojwang's beating inside cell?

In his written tell-all confession to IPOA, the officer claimed that Ojwang was assaulted by four inmates who had been contracted for KSh 2,000 and alcohol, as they needed a stimulant to carry out the lethal task.

He alleged that Samson Talaam, the officer commanding the Central Police Station, ordered him to organise the assault, which was to be of middling magnitude, that would only see Ojwang injured and hospitalised before being discharged; death had not been contemplated.

The inmates were reportedly identified and sent to the cell where Ojwang was, opposite the station's toilets; this was after the deceased's booking moments past 9pm on June 7.

The quartet, namely Collins Ireri, Gil Ammiton, Brian Mwaniki, and Erick Ndambuki, set out for the cell after imbibing alcohol and started descending on Ojwang.

The group, according to Mukhwana, went on with the aggression, overpowering Ojwang in the process, causing him to scream.

The screams got the attention of Mukhwana, who immediately rushed to the cell, where he found the victim seated, helpless, and on the floor with blood flowing from the mouth.

He intervened and stopped the beating, according to his account as told to IPOA.

Mukhwana then quickly organised for Ojwang to be taken to the hospital at 10pm.
