"In the last few days, we have witnessed a spate of road accidents across the country. As a service, we extend our condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones and wish a quick recovery to those recovering in the hospital.
The NPS is working collaboratively with various state agencies to conduct thorough and expeditious investigations to determine the causes of these accidents," police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said.
According to Nyaga, preliminary investigations show recent accidents could have been avoided had drivers and road users avoided basic mistakes such as speeding.
"The vast majority of these accidents are preventable if road users change their behaviour by avoiding speeding, dangerous overtaking, drink-driving, overloading, driver fatigue, and careless road crossing," the statement read.
What should Kenyans do to prevent road accidents?
To deal with the rising accidents, NPS has urged passengers to report bad or erratic driving through specific numbers for action to be taken against the driver.
According to NPS, all stakeholders on the road should play their rightful roles if the country is to prevent deaths through accidents.
"It should be appreciated that life is not only precious but irreplaceable. To effectively prevent deaths on our roads, all stakeholders in road transport must play their rightful roles. Let every road user be aware of the consequences of their actions and take responsibility for their own safety and that of others. Passengers are advised to report any bad or erratic driving via our toll-free numbers: 999, 911, 112, or Fichuachkwa DCI (0800722203, OR WhatsApp at 0709570000)," NPS said.
