US Government Raises Concerns Over William Ruto’s Regime Troubling Human Rights Track Record

The government of the United States has raised concerns about the deteriorating state of the human rights track record in the year 2024.

In a recent report on Human Rights Practices issued by the U.S. Department of State, they seemingly criticised instances of disappearances, torture, media restrictions, and what they termed as unlawful killings during protests that have been staged in the country.

They also mentioned cases of physical violence and arbitrary arrests and freedoms that have been on the rise in recent days.

"Kenya experienced a deterioration in the human rights situation during the year. In response to nationwide protests in June and July, authorities reportedly committed numerous abuses, including unlawful killings, physical violence, and arbitrary arrests and detentions," he statement read in part.

The department further stated that they took note of the efforts made by the Kenya Kwanza government in identifying and punishing officials who committed the crimes of violating human rights.

However, they noted that impunity was still exhibited, at it was still a problem at all levels of the President William Ruto-led government.

"Kenya experienced a deterioration in the human rights situation during the year. In response to nationwide protests in June and July, authorities reportedly committed numerous abuses, including unlawful killings, physical violence, and arbitrary arrests and detentions," the report stated.
