CHAN 2024: NPS Announces Closure of Major Roads Ahead of Harambee Stars vs Zambia Game

Nairobi - The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a notice to motorists of an upcoming traffic disruption this Sunday, August 17.

In a notice issued by Joseph Chirchir, Officer Commanding Traffic in Nairobi County, several roads will be closed, while others will witness diversions.
The disruption of traffic is due to the highly anticipated 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) match between Harambee Stars and Zambia.

Which roads will be closed for CHAN 2024?
The crucial match will be held at the Moi Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Sunday, August 17, at 3 pm.
"Due to the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), the National Police Service wishes to inform the public of temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Nairobi on Sunday, August 17, 2025. as follows..," the notice read.
Chirchir announced that three key roads leading to the city will be closed to allow free flow of traffic around Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium.
The road to be closed will be Aerodrome Road from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout, Lang'ata Road from Madaraka Roundabout to Lusaka Roundabout and Mombasa Road from Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.
The NPS has provided several alternative routes for motorists who might be affected by the closure of roads.
Which roads will be diverted?
According to the notice, motorists from Mombasa Road going to Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD) have been urged to use the Likoni-Enterprise Road at General Motors and the Southern Bypass at Ole Sereni.
The motorists intending to access the CBD from Lang'ata Road have been asked to use the Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road at Mbagathi Roundabout.
Those intending to use Thika Road from the CBD will use the Kiambu Road at Exit 4. But those heading to Mwiki were advised to take the Ruaraka-Baba Dogo-Lucky Summer-Nairobi River route.
Motorists from Thika, Juja, and Ruiru who plan to access the CBD will be required to use the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road, as NPS stated that there will be a roadblock at the Ruiru interchange.
According to the notice, drivers from Githurai to Nairobi CBD will use the Githurai 44-Kiambu Road.
And lastly, motorists from Nairobi heading to Kasarani Stadium without vehicle access will be required to use the service lane at Exit 7 and Exit 8.
At the same time, NPS advised Kenyans to avoid Thika Road unless they are going to attend the match at Kasarani.
"Avoid Thika Road unless travelling to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani Stadium. The National Police Service is working collaboratively with relevant agencies to ensure the free flow of traffic. Additional police officers have been deployed and will take stern action against anyone violating traffic rules," NPS said.

Why should ticketless fans avoid Kasarani?
In other news, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced security measures ahead of the Sunday, August 17 game.
Addressing the press, the Interior CS urged football fans without tickets for the Harambee Stars match against Zambia to keep off the Kasarani Stadium.
He called on Kenyans to comply with the requirements of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which sanctioned certain measures after the security breaches during the Kenya vs Morocco match.
