EACC Confirms Several MPs, Senators Are Under Investigation over Bribery: "You'll See Consequences"

This follows President William Ruto publicly declared a crackdown on the lawmakers linked to bribery.
Were bribery complaints raised about Parliament?
Speaking to the press on Tuesday, August 19, the EACC chairperson, David Oginde, stated that complaints have been raised by various groups that claimed that some Parliamentary Committees request bribes.

Oginde stated that following this, the EACC embarked on a mission to conduct investigations into several legislators.
"We are doing active investigations on various individuals. When that kind of information is available, we will share it with the members of the public. You will also see the consequences at the various levels of the legal system," Oginde added.
He stated that it was not the first time it had received complaints about the Parliament, stating that several MPs ask for bribes so as to pass or reject various proposals.
"Misuse of CDF (Constituency Development Funds) inflated allowances. Payments by various individuals who want to be protected," Oginde stated.
Does EACC plan to meet Parliament speakers?
The corruption agency further revealed plans to meet with National Assembly speaker Moses Wetangu'la, Senate speaker Amason Kingi and the chairs of various Parliamentary Committees to ensure that there are no factors that would hinder transparency during the probe.
"We would like to find out, there are specific individuals who are particularly engaged in this and what can be done. Not to punish the current one, but to stop the whole process completely," he added.
Before this, various lobby groups demanded that the head of state be summoned before the Parliament so he could provide evidence over the allegations he made against legislators.
"So if he has evidence, we hope that he has already provided it to the investigating authorities. If he hasn't, we expect that he will provide that evidence. so that thorough investigations can be made," Transparency International Kenya's director Esther Masinde told Citizen TV.
Oscar Sudi agrees with Ruto, Raila over bribery claims
In a separate incident, the Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi, unlike many of his colleagues, agreed with Ruto and former prime minister Raila Odinga over bribery claims in Parliament.

Sudi agreed with Raila and Ruto's claims that there exists a group of legislators who extort those who appear before them.
He, however, alleged that the two syndicates comprised of the minority groups in both the Senate and the National Assembly
The outspoken politician further suggested that extensive corruption is found more in the executive than in the legislature.
