In a statement on Thursday, August 21, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said suspects were linked to the kidnapping of two young women from Nyeri county.
How did DCI learn about Thika kidnapping incident?
DCI said Davis Mugambi and John Maina Macharia were arrested following a tip-off from members of the public who noticed two women being held against their will in a house in the Muguga area.
After receiving the intelligence reports, detectives swiftly launched an operation at the said house, rescuing the victims, who were found visibly shaken.
"The suspects, Davis Mugambi and John Maina Macharia, were nabbed after a timely tip-off from vigilant members of the public who reported that two young women were being held against their will in a house at Muguga area.
"Responding swiftly, detectives stormed the house and found the two victims visibly shaken, in tears, and nursing signs of physical assault. Their mobile phones had been seized by the suspects in a bid to cut them off from the outside world," DCI said.
During the operation, detectives recovered seven mobile phones, eight SIM plates and a vehicle, suspected to be the gang's getaway car.
Which items did DCI find in the kidnappers' house
Inside the vehicle, detectives found four kitchen knives, seven matchboxes, and other suspicious items.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the victims were kidnapped in Nyeri on August 19 and ferried to Thika by the suspects.
According to DCI, Mugambi is linked to a criminal web, given that he is wanted in Nyeri for a string of kidnappings and theft cases
"Preliminary investigations revealed that the two women were kidnapped in Nyeri on August 19, 2025, and ferried to Thika using the impounded vehicle. Further digging has unmasked Mugambi as a wanted man in Nyeri for a string of kidnapping and theft cases, suggesting the suspects may be part of a wider criminal web. The duo is cooling their heels in police custody as detectives finalise investigations before their date in court," the DCI said.
