What did elderly Narok man tell Kanja?

Speaking on Tuesday, April 30, at a public event attended by the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, a visibly agitated man told the police boss he had only two options: to resign or arrest the officers accused of killing civilians.

The man, appearing deeply distressed, reminded IG Kanja that he oversees all police officers in the country and that people had been killed under his leadership.

“I’m asking you to hear me out. Whether you arrest me or not, I’m fine with either. We come from the same community as Ruto. The people firing the gunshots are from his tribe, and you’re earning your salary from his government. You have two choices to make," the man said.

The man added that if Kanja truly wants peace, he should ensure the officers accused of killing residents are held accountable.

The remarks drew laughter from the crowd, with some impressed by the elderly man's confidence in addressing Kanja.

What did IG Douglas Kanja do?

After listening to the frustrated and deeply distressed residents of Angata Barrakoi, IG Kanja ordered the immediate transfer of a senior police officer who was adversely mentioned by locals as the perpetrator of the unfortunate events that led to the loss of five lives.

The IG also vowed to ensure the police officer who pulled the trigger that killed civilians would be held individually liable for their actions.

His sentiments were echoed by Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, who condemned the shooting, saying those involved would face the wrath of the law.

"The investigations are ongoing, and we expect those who were involved will be dealt with according to the law, including those who attacked police officers," said Murkomen.

Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntuntu called on the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to commence investigation into the killings without delay.

"I have formally engaged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to ensure that a thorough investigation is conducted and that those responsible are held accountable in accordance with the law. It is deeply regrettable that longstanding land disputes have escalated to such a tragic outcome, particularly at a time when we were nearing the resolution of the conflict between the Angata and Moyoi adjudication sections, a process I have personally supervised for the past one and a half years," said the governor.

In a statement released on their official X account, the DCI refuted the claims, branding them false and marking the post with a bold “FAKE” label to reinforce their position.

On Tuesday, April 29, Kanja and Mohamed visited the conflict-hit Angata Barrikoi area in Trans Mara, Narok county. The two were part of a larger security delegation deployed to help contain rising tension in the region following a deadly confrontation the previous day.

Reports had earlier circulated suggesting that Kanja and Mohamed were unable to disembark from the chopper due to fears of hostility from angry locals, allegedly forcing them to remain grounded for some time before safely proceeding with their mission.

Masolo Mabonga, HOD Current Affairs and Politics, updated this article with details on what IG Douglas Kanja do after listening to the people of Angata Barakoi.
