Tragedy as 19-Year-Old Girl Dies in Kirinyaga After Urgent Call to Family: "Hurry Home"

Sorrow has engulfed Red Soil Village in Nyangati location, Mwea-East sub-county, Kirinyaga County, following the untimely death of a 19-year-old girl under distressing circumstances just hours after making emotional phone calls to her father and elder sister.

The young woman, Recheal Mwahaki, reportedly called her sister, Regina Ng'endo, and her father, Peter Mwang’i, in a state of panic, urging them to return home immediately.

According to her, their mother, Elizabeth Wakuthii, was allegedly threatening to take her own life.

Ng’endo recounted that her sister did not explain why their mother wanted to take her own life.

She further revealed that their father had left the family home five days earlier following a disagreement with their mother.

“She called me and told me to come home quickly, saying our mother wanted to take her own life. I told her I didn’t have fare, and she sent me the money. Sadly, by the time I arrived, I found her lifeless in her bedroom,” Ng'endo shared, visibly shaken.

Her father also returned home after receiving the distressing call, only to be met with the tragic scene.

One of the village in-charge, Stephen Kimani, a villager, said he contacted the Wanguru Police Station, and officers arrived shortly after the alarm was raised by neighbours.

Kimani added that Wakuthii appeared emotionally unstable, but declined to answer questions about her state of mind.

“I found her mother, Elizabeth Wakuthii, at home, and her daughter had already passed. When I asked her what had happened, and she looked like someone who wanted to take life,” he said.

The Kirinyaga branch of the Counselling and Psychological Association, led by chairman Kamau Muchira, expressed deep concern over the growing number of such tragic incidents in the region.

“This is a heartbreaking case, especially during May, which is dedicated to mental health awareness. It highlights the urgent need for more mental health support and public education in our communities,” Muchira stated.

The body was taken to Kibugi Funeral Home awaiting postmortem, as police launched investigations into the incident.

In other tragic news, family, friends, and members of the online community in Kenya were recently left mourning the demise of Shalody Chepkoech, a young woman from Embomos in Bomet County.

Shalody was a first-year student at the University of Kabianga, enrolled in the School of Education, Arts, and Social Sciences.

She tragically passed away on Thursday, April 24, around 4 p.m., while undergoing treatment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, after a brief illness.

According to a statement issued by the university’s Dean of Students, Mary Goretti Wosyanju, Shalody had initially been treated at Kapkatet Sub-county Hospital before being transferred to MTRH on Sunday, April 13, where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Her brother, Bernard Chirchir, confirmed the heartbreaking news, expressing that her passing has left a significant void in their family.

In October 2024, Shalody moved many online when she launched an appeal seeking financial assistance for her education.

Generous well-wishers responded, contributing enough funds to cover her tuition fees up to her third year.

Her untimely departure has deeply affected those who knew her, both personally and through her inspiring story.
