7-Day Weather Alert: Kenya Met Warns of Heavy Rains, Scorching Heat in Nairobi and Other Counties

Which regions will receive heavy rains this week?

North-Western Kenya

Counties: Samburu and Turkana.

Anticipate rain in the morning, along with showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and at night over a few places.

North-Eastern Kenya

Counties: Isiolo, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, and Garissa.

Expect scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day, with the possibility of heavier downpours in the morning.

The South-Eastern Lowlands

Counties: Taita Taveta, Machakos, parts of Tana River, Makueni, Kitui, and Kajiado.

Sunny intervals are expected during the day, with partly cloudy conditions likely at night. However, isolated afternoon and nighttime showers may occur in some areas.

The Highlands East of the Rift Valley

Counties: Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Meru, Murang'a, Tharaka Nithi, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Embu, and Laikipia.

Mornings are expected to be cloudy with light rain in a few areas, followed by sunny intervals. Afternoon and night showers, along with thunderstorms, are likely in some areas and may occasionally spread more widely.

Coast Region

Counties: Coastal parts of Tana River, Mombasa, Lamu, Kwale, and Kilifi.

Showers are likely in a few places throughout the day, occasionally becoming more widespread.

The Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands West of the Rift Valley, and the Rift Valley

Counties: Narok, Nandi, Nyamira, Nakuru, Bomet, Baringo, Busia, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Kakamega, Kisumu, Kericho, Kisii, Homa Bay, Migori, Elgeyo Marakwet, Siaya, Uasin Gishu, Vihiga, and West Pokot.

Morning rains are expected in a few areas, while afternoon and night showers accompanied by thunderstorms are likely to occur across several regions.

Meanwhile, high daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C are forecast for most areas in the Coast, North-Eastern, and North-Western Kenya.

Mother, 2 kids die after floods wreak havoc

Meanwhile, on April 22, at least six people lost their lives following heavy rains that caused widespread destruction and displacement across several parts of Nairobi.

Among the victims were a mother and her two children, who died in Mathare after a massive boulder, loosened by the rains, crashed into their home.

The tragedy occurred after a nearby river burst its banks, weakening the surrounding soil and triggering the deadly rockfall as the family slept.
