Lusaka launches food programme
On Wednesday, April 30, Lusaka launched a free Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) feeding programme aimed at supporting young learners across the county.
The initiative targets 90,750 children enrolled in 820 ECDE centres, providing each with 40 grams of fortified porridge three times a week.
Governor Lusaka emphasised that the programme is designed to combat hunger among children, which can hinder their ability to concentrate, play, and learn effectively.
He stated that a well-nourished child is more likely to thrive and become a future leader.
The county government allocated KSh 30 million for the feeding programme in the current financial year.
Additionally, KSh 23 million was set aside for ECDE teaching and learning materials, and KSh 25 million for vocational training equipment.
The fortified porridge, approved by county nutritionists, aims to address nutritional deficiencies among learners.
A total of 141,570 kilograms of porridge has been procured to sustain the programme throughout the school term.
This comprehensive approach seeks to improve nutrition, attendance, and academic performance among young learners in Bungoma County.
