It was part of a bold effort to dismantle drug networks and illegal alcohol operations threatening the city’s youth.

The operation, which kicked off at 4pm at Ndonyo Market, was spearheaded by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nicholas Kosgei. Backed by a 15-man enforcement team, the mission aimed to root out chang’aa dens and drug hotspots that have long plagued the area.

The initiative, according to SSP Kosgei, was a decisive response to rising public concern over unchecked drug abuse and alcoholism, particularly among young people.

Acting on intelligence reports, the officers first descended on four premises suspected to be brewing and selling chang’aa. However, the targets had either been tipped off or had vanished, leaving the officers with no suspects or exhibits to detain.

Unfazed, the team redirected its attention to a well-known drug hub near a railway line, where a group of young men was openly consuming narcotics. As the officers approached, the situation quickly unravelled into chaos.

The suspects scattered, dashing into nearby shanties and open fields, abandoning a three-quarter sack of what was believed to be bhang.

Though the team recovered the stash, the situation escalated when a group of enraged youths returned, hurling stones at the officers and damaging their vehicle.

Fortunately, no one was injured, and the enforcement team executed a tactical withdrawal to de-escalate the tension and prevent further conflict.

Addressing the press after the operation, Kosgei said NACADA is committed to flushing out drug traffickers and illegal brewers.

“We will not allow drug traffickers and illicit brewers to destroy our youth. This operation sends a strong message, we are watching, and we will strike without warning,” he said.

The seized narcotics were secured at Jogoo Road Police Station’s exhibit store, with a full incident report filed at Riruta Police Station.

Mutuini residents, who have long decried the rampant drug activity in their neighbourhood, welcomed the operation.

Many view NACADA’s intervention as a long-overdue and vital step in reclaiming their community from criminal grip.
