The president directed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to work closely with Education CS Julius Ogamba to facilitate the relocation and ensure that Tom Mboya University is immediately allocated the newly available land for development.

"This university needs room to grow, and the prison land presents a great opportunity. There’s plenty of unused land in Lambwe Valley where the correctional facility can be relocated," Ruto said.

Is Lambwe Valley infested with tsetse fly?

Addressing public concerns over the suitability of Lambwe Valley, a region once notorious for tsetse fly infestation, Ruto clarified that the decision is not punitive but driven by practicality.

In addition to unlocking space, the president unveiled plans to improve student accommodation at the university.

He announced that the government had advertised the first phase of a hostel construction project. The initial block, with a capacity of 2,300 beds, is expected to be completed by next year.

“We have already started the process to build hostels. In the first phase, a 2,300-bed facility will be put up and completed by next year,” he stated, adding that he would return to launch the facility once it is ready.

Ruto further disclosed plans for a new blue economy complex at Tom Mboya University to boost the government's environmental conservation efforts.

The facility will involve students in conserving the Lake Victoria ecosystem while promoting sustainable livelihoods.

To fund the initiative, the president said he had tasked Treasury CS John Mbadi with mobilising resources and engaging state agencies and development partners.
